2008 Official Rules

Note:  Changes from last year are highlighted in blue.

1:  Only Official BSA Space Derby Kits supplied by the pack are to be used.  Scout’s name and year of race must    be clearly visible on ship.  Ship numbers will be assigned by the Derby Master software and the numbers will be placed on the ships by the race managers.

2:  The ship may not be modified to a length greater than 7 inches.

3:  A scout must be present when his ship is racing to be eligible to win an award.

4:  Order of finish will be determined by total aggregate race time.

5:  The rubber bands in the kit may only be used for preflight.  The pack will provide fresh pretreated rubber bands on race day at check in.  Pretreated rubber bands will also be provided for flight testing the night before the race.

6:  The Space Derby Committee will specify the quantity of rubber bands per ship, this is usually two (2).

7:  No modifications to the rubber bands, propeller, or other supplied hardware are permitted. The ends of the rubber band retainer (plastic dowel) at the rear of the ship may be cut so that the ends are flush with the ship.  The bottom of the hangar may be cut to be flush with the inside of the ship to prevent interference with the rubber bands.  Tail fins may be cut to any shape desired.

8:  Only one retainer at the rear of the ship may be utilized.  This prevents unfair pre-tension of the rubber bands.

9:  No graphite, powder, or other lubricants are allowed.  Only the pre-treated rubber bands supplied by the Pack are allowed.

10:  All Space Derby Ships must be checked in 15 minutes prior to posted flight times.

11:  All scouts will report to flight school after pre-flight check in.  After each scout receives his flight school certificate, he will return his ship to space dock until his squadron is scheduled to blast off.

12:  During the race each scout will be responsible for winding his ship, transporting it to the launch pad and retrieving it from the re-entry point for the next race.  The exception will be if Tigers need assistance from parents, it will be permitted.  Also any scout with special needs may be assisted by a parent or guardian.

13:  In the event of a missed time during the race that scout will be allowed to re-run the race on the same lane for a valid time.

14:  In the event of a broken rubber band during a race that scout will report to space dock for a race official to replace the broken band.

15:  In the event of a broken propeller the scout will report to space dock for a race official to replace the propeller assembly.

All rulings by the “Derby Master Software” are final.
